The Tyne and Wear Heritage Way is an 80-mile route taking in the rich historic and industrial heritage of the area.
The route passes through Burradon Farm, where our ancient Pele Tower features as a significant landmark.
The route is broken down into nine convenient sections that can be walked at any time, in any order. Each section can be walked in a day.
Sections 1, 2 and 3 are the closest to Burradon Farm and are detailed below:
Section 1 – North Shields to Seaton Sluice (8 miles). Follow the River Tyne towards the sea, passing the busy Fish Quay and Tynemouth Castle and Priory. Walk along the coast past Spanish City at Whitley Bay and continue past St. Mary’s Island. Finish by the dramatic cut at Seaton Sluice.
Section 2 – Seaton Sluice to Burradon (9 miles). Leave Seaton Sluice along the peaceful Holywell Dene. Continue inland along former waggonways, catching a distant glimpse of Seaton Delaval Hall. Pass Holywell Pond and onwards to the Pele Tower beside Burradon Farm.
Section 3 – Burradon to Ponteland (8.5 miles). See the view from the highest point in Weetslade Country Park. Continue on past the lake at Big Waters and the unspoilt natural area of Prestwick Carr, where wild ponies roam. This is an unspoilt area of wet grassland, rich in bird life. Finish in Ponteland.
