The iconic Alnwick Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England as well as a filming location for many movies. Why not try broomstick flying just like Harry Potter. Or envisage yourself submerged in Downton Abbey during your visit?!
Bamburgh Castle is set in a truly stunning location and is one of England’s finest fortresses. Home of the Armstrong family since 1894 it has stood guard above the Northumberland coast for thousands of years.
The dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle can be seen from the wave-battered coastline. It is reached via a beautiful walk from the nearby village of Craster.
Warkworth Castle is a mighty fortress crowning the hilltop above the River Coquet. Visitors can enjoy spectacular river and coastal views from the castle walls and there is lots to explore.
Chillingham Castle is reportedly Northumberland’s most haunted castle! If you’re looking for a chilling experience, why not visit their ‘Torture Chamber’ or evening Ghost Tours.
Lindisfarne Castle is a castle (that’s not a castle), on an island (that’s not an island). Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on the tranquil Holy Island, near Berwick-upon-Tweed. The island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway. Check tide times before visiting!
Prudhoe Castle is a Norman castle with many a story to tell and a trip to this fortress is truly worthwhile. Part of a series of castles built after 1066 Prudhoe was the only Northumberland castle to resist the Scots.
The mid 14th century Etal Castle is set in the charming village of Etal over the river Till. Its award-winning exhibition outlines the interesting story of the warfare of this border castle. You can also visit the Flodden Battlefields, just a stone’s throw away, as well as the surroundings of the Ford and Etal Estates.
Don’t forget our very own ‘castle’ right here at Burradon Farm Houses and Cottages. Our Grade II listed Pele Tower stands at the centre of the farm and is a well preserved ruin built during hostilities with Scotland. It is protected by English Heritage as a Scheduled Ancient Monument so can only be viewed from the outside. But nonetheless, it is an amazing piece of history right here on our doorstep!
