Seaton Delaval Hall is a National Trust property located just 10 minutes drive from Burradon Farm. We recently visited the house and gardens to see all of the changes they have made.
Over the last three years Seaton Delaval Hall has undergone extensive conservation works. Their programme of improvements has also benefitted visitor facilities thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The impressive façade leads to a wonderful entrance hall complete with mirrored installation designed to draw the eye to the architecture above. Two beautifully restored spiral staircases and new flagstone floor in the basement have brought the space back to life.
The gardens and outdoor spaces are interesting and varied with spaces perfect for adults and children alike. The gardens boast large open spaces, relaxing corners and hideaways, as well as beautiful borders, flowers, trees and shrubbery.
Reintroduced historic sightlines and path networks lead visitors towards the new playful and creative installations in the South East Gardens. These draw inspiration from the mischievous antics for which the Delavals were known.
A fantastic new children’s play area in the North West Woods will definitely wear the kids out! With picnic tables dotted around the gardens visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like.
Don’t forget the brand new Brewhouse Café which offers great coffee, tasty scones and plenty of choice on the menu. Located in a listed building they have created a lovely space with lots of indoor and outdoor seating.
Most of the grounds are accessible with many newly laid paths and walkways. The basement of the Hall is also accessible and its sympathetic lighting allows the architecture to speak for itself.
‘Legend’ has it that there is a secret tunnel from Burradon Tower to Seaton Delaval Hall … it is yet to be found!
